ACE AIR: SOPHIA LE FRAGA
3PM - SUN JUN 28, 2015
PRIVATE HAPPENING - NEW YORK
At Ace, we agree with Richard Avedon when he says, "Anything is an art if you do it at the level of an art." Sculpture, mineral, sound, a well wrought ink line on a page. Some people wink and call it art. We know that good thinking and good making take space, and also time — two things we don't have much of in New York City — and it is in this spirit that Ace Hotel New York first dreamt up its Artists in Residence series, a night for artists to give their ideas some space to expand and fester and bloom. Artists come on Sunday nights, and on Monday mornings, we find out what they've made.
Sophia Le Fraga is a poet and visual artist. She is the author of literallydead (Spork), I RL, YOU RL (minuteBOOKS; Troll Thread) and I DON'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE INTERNET (Keep this Bag Away from Children), as well as the iMessage and Gchat anti-plays "W8ING 4" and "TH3 B4LD 50PR4N0" (GaussPDF). Recent exhibitions include "Itself Not So" at Lisa Cooley (New York), "The Printed Room" at SALTS (Basel) and "Online/Offline: Encoding Everyday Life" at Vorspiel Transmediale (Berlin). She is the poetry editor of Imperial Matters and teaches at BHQFU.
This June, Ace AIR is curated by BHQFU, New York City’s freest art school. A completely tuition-free learning experiment where artists work together to manifest creative, productive, resistant, useless, and demanding interactions between art and the world, BHQFU offers dozens of classes annually, stages free public programming year-round, and operates two cost-free artist studio residency programs. Go take a class with them. BHQFU is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
